INTRODUCING GRAPE VARIETAL SPECIFIC STEMWARE

There’s many a wine glass in the world, but not all are made equal. Far from it in fact. From the weight and feel in hand, to the olfactory experience altered by subtle curves and depth of rim diameter and of course, the aesthetics. As with all aspects within the sensorial sensation of dining and drinking, every detail of a wine glass has the ability to either enhance or depreciate the overall enjoyment of your favourite varietal.

Since launching the world-renowned Sommeliers series in the 1970s, the Riedel brand (who we are now proud to be partnered with) has taken the purpose of stemware to a whole new level. Any good oenophile knows that every grape is unique. Every bottle offers something special and having a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to selecting the appropriate receptacle simply doesn’t cut it. It was with this knowledge and respect for the splendour of wine that some of the world’s greatest palettes came together to create glasses which fulfil their true raison d'être. Not merely a vehicle for liquid to lips, but an accomplice to a near hedonistic tasting, delivering wine as it should be, every time.

When developing their exceptional range of glassware through rigorous, physical trial and error, Riedel focused on the characteristics of each different type of wine, rather than ‘the experience of wine’ as one thing. This personified approach enabled the experts to reveal the message each grape is trying to convey and in turn, create a glass specifically designed to transport this appropriately to your taste buds.

With Riedel, a wine need never be lost in translation again.

WHAT’S IN A SHAPE?

To the untrained eye, a glass may just be a glass, but to those in the know, stemware consists of 3 parts: the bowl, stem and base. And each piece plays an important role in taking the most amount of pleasure possible from your chosen tipple.

The height of the stem and the width of the base are part of the glass design (known as the architecture). Grape varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of 3 variables: shape, size and rim diameter; to translate the "message" of wine to the human senses.

WHAT’S IN A MESSAGE?

Although every wine has something different to say, they do all speak the same language and it is with this silent dialect that we obtain our true enjoyment of wine.
There are four main sensations that wine has to give (which make up the ‘message’) and every Riedel wine glass is designed to let these flourish in just the right way. As explained by the pros at Riedel, these sensations are the following:

Bouquet
Grape varietal specific stemware is re¬sponsible for delivering the quality and intensity of the wine's aroma.

Texture
Grape varietal specific stemware highlights the exciting and diverse styles of "mouthfeel" in wine (watery, creamy, silky, velvety).

Flavour
Grape varietal specific stemware creates a ba¬lanced interaction between the fruit, minerality, acidity and bitter components of a wine.

Finish
Grape varietal specific stemware offers a pleasant, seamless, harmonious, and long lasting aftertaste.
