Marie Michielsson

MARIE MICHIELSSON

Resident designer for Serax, Marie Michielsson is the wife of Axel Van Den Bosshe, (the ‘ax’ in Serax who now leads the company). Marie brings more than twenty years of design experience to her collections. Her training in graphic design translates into the distinctive prints that appear on many of her designs while her love of working with paper, porcelain and canvass, (or as she herself says, ‘materials ‘with soul’), result in her distinctive papier mâché lamps and pots.

She often reuses, (upcycles), old, forgotten materials giving them a new lease of life in the objects she reinvents for each season’s collection.

TEA LIGHTS

Porcelain tea light holders radiate warmth from richly coloured exteriors. Although the colours are varied, they are all in balanced tones with the result that a complete set resembles a collection of softly glowing jewels. When lit, the gold interiors amplify and intensify the light of the candles within to create a uniquely lovely and intimate ambience.

EARTH

This collection of papier mâché pots exudes comfort and simplicity. The natural look and feel of clay is translated into a lightweight and versatile medium, with the added advantage of greater resilience and where print and paint replace the traditional glaze of ceramics. Hugely appealing and satisfying to look at and touch, they earth pots make a distinctive and pleasing addition to any dining area.

URBAN JUNGLE

Urban Jungle plant stand (B7217017 35x100 H170cm): Fabricated from laquered, stainless steel, the stand is part of the Urban Jungle collection which, as Serax says, is designed to bring the outdoors inside. Plants are essential to human health and wellbeing, bringing a sense of calm and ease to their surroundings. Creating a sense of the natural world in an interior, however, is about more than just assembling a number of plants. In nature there is an underlying harmony, a natural backdrop. This harmony is captured a perfectly crafted stand whose simple lines, muted colour and smooth texture offset and enhances the natural exuberance and irregularity of any flowers or foliage.

BREADBASKET

The canvas bread basket with its clean lines and muted colours, references the Japanese love of canvas holders but the fresh, three dimensional print is unmistakably ‘Marie’.

CACTUS VASE

Marie’s cactus vases have been described as ‘quirky’, ‘eye-catching’, ‘cheerful’ and ‘inspiring’. They were an instant success when they were first produced and continue to be in high demand. Their vivid colours and appealing forms enliven any space and there is also something surprisingly mutable about them. They can look and feel quite different depending on the flora and foliage they contain and on the ways in which these are arranged. This must be why one critic observed that the cactus vases, ‘bring out the designer’ in you!

‘CAGE’ LIGHTING

Concrete Pendant Light with metal cage: Urban minimalism with a touch of Bauhaus, the elegant simplicity of the lines of this concrete, hanging light would complete any modern, uncluttered interior. Although it is quintessentially modern, it has a classic look. This is thanks to the way in which it seamlessly references the most influential art and design movements of the early 20th century, while reworking these in an entirely unique and stylish way.
