Piet Boon – Rockst*r

IF DESIGN WERE ROCK'N'ROLL, THEN PIET BOON UNDOUBTEDLY RANKS AMONG THE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN "SUPERSTARS" OF OUR TIME.

If that sounds like hyperbole, consider that Boon designs not just houses and restaurants but entire neighbourhoods, including the floating neighbourhood near Almere, Netherlands. Not only does he conjure up spell-binding interiors for homes, hotels and restaurants but he models interiors for entire resorts and developments around the world.

He is lead designer, for example, for interior design and ‘other concepts’ for the entire luxury development at Rosewood Half Moon Bay, Antigua, set to open in 2021. From yachts and Range Rover cars to furniture, lighting and tableware - if it can be designed, Piet Boon designs it.

His unmistakable style and approach are both iconic and difficult to actually define, despite the many books and articles that attempt to describe it.

Of himself he has said that the three essentials behind his
design approach are:

1. A perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality

2. Durability. Referring to enduring designs, which age beautifully and only become more desirable over time.

3. And a warm and personalised experience or, when we design a corporate project, the perfect translation of our client’s brand identity in our design.

The word ‘perfect’ is one that Boon uses thoughtfully. He does, indeed, aim for what he believes is achievable perfection. And perhaps the reason he has such an ardent following internationally, why so many people are mesmerised by his designs and eager to understand what gives them their extraordinary power, is that he does seem to produce, again and again, what we most want but which only a designer of Boon’s
calibre can make tangible.

Trendland’s Tara Lange put it like this:

"Few architects are as relevant as Piet Boon. In part because of the world’s growing appreciation (obsession really) for Scandinavian simplicity but also because Boon has an uncanny knack for coming impossibly close to what would be described by many, as perfection.”

Of course, Boon does not work alone. He founded Studio Piet Boon, in the village of Oostzaan near Amsterdam in 1983 as a small company specializing in the design of ‘bespoke’ homes. This was a natural if not bold, step for the twenty-seven-year-old builder and contractor turned architect and designer. In 1986 he was joined by another celebrated designer, wife Karin Meyn and the rest, as they say, is history."

Who knows if, one day, a Studio Piet Boon piece will be as collectable and desirable as a Hepplewhite, Sheraton or Adams - and for many of the same reasons. What is certain, however, is that right now it is possible to experience in the ‘Base’ range, that extraordinary combination of comfort, beauty and durability that, if not perfect, comes very, very close!
